Okay, fandom! Sometime in July, maybe even on July 1st, control of Delicious will transfer to AVOS. Any Delicious account that has not explicitly opted in to the transfer will be lost forever. I would like to generate a list of fannish accounts that have not opted in and back up all their PUBLIC bookmarks. To do this, I need a lot of help, in not a lot of time. That's where you come in. Things you can do to assist in this endeavor:

  1. Link this post around!
  2. Comment to this post with any fannish Delicious accounts that you know of. Don't worry about duplicating someone else's suggestions, or listing accounts that have maybe already opted in. We're aiming for maximum coverage in this step. I'll be filtering the lists programmatically. To that end, please keep your lists simple and consistent, with each account name on its own line and no extra text.
  3. Feeling ambitious? Volunteer to help do the actual backing up by emailing me at my gmail account, verymurklins. You need to have Java installed on your computer and be willing to use a command line interface to run a script. More detailed instructions will be provided, of course, but since we're short on time, I won't be able to walk people through installing Java, so volunteers will have to get that part done on their own. Note: If your computer runs Mac OS X, it already has Java.
And what will I do with all the archived accounts? I don't exactly know yet. For now, I just want to be sure that someone, somewhere, has a copy of all this fannish data. Once the transfer to AVOS goes through, we'll get a feel for the new landscape of Delicious and weigh the options.

ETA: wow, I totally fail, this went up weeks ago. Still, always good to signal boost right?

Hey look, straight cis m/m authors showing their asses! Because my life totally needed more rage in it.

My favorite thing to come out of this so far is the discussion between kynn and elfwreck here. Kynn is just so damn incisive, it is awesome to behold.

Anyway, I know whose books I won't be buying!

ETA: More linkage here (and part 1 which links to early discussion.) Also specifies some authors and reviewers, which may be useful for DNW lists.

We went to synagogue for the first time ever (excluding b'nai mitzvah) today. A friend of mine is leading the High Holiday services. The singing was great!

In other news, I has internet at home now! Lately I've been reading Zorro by Isabel Allende and considering which fandoms to nominate for Yuletide this year (not that nominations are open yet. I just want to not miss it this year!) So far, I'm got the Bartimaeus trilogy, Wicked Gentlemen, The Grounding of Group 6 (if I can get a copy of the book by then), Milk (2008), One Flea Spare (READ IT! OMG) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992 movie.) Also, Tipping the Velvet, but I think that's a shoe-in.

FriendsorEnemies just sent me a welcome message... what? 6 months after I tried to sign up? Fail.

A happy and sweet new year to you all!

HOLYFUCKHOLYFUCKHOLYFUCK. I MADE IT. WITH A MINUTE OR TWO TO SPARE. \o/

My fic for Femslash09 is up over here (I recommend reading it with a white background but whatever.) It's Dr. Horrible, Groupie 1/Groupie 2. I haven't really had time to be nervous about it, but now that's it's posted I'm extremely nervous. AHHHHH. I shall go to bed and pray for comments in the morning.

I received an incredibly awesome fic for Femslash09: More Than Nostalgia by [livejournal.com profile] hyel. It's Faculty fic, with Stokely/Marybeth and Stokely/Delilah. AS;LKAJSDKFLJKL! I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW HAPPY IT MAKES ME. It's both creepy and sweet, it plays with the lesbian insinuations from the movie, and the voices are perfect. AND DID I MENTION: FACULTY FEMSLASH!!!! ALSDKF;ALKSDJFKLASJDFKLJAKSJDFKJAS!

Aaand, I also received fic from the Apocalyptothon. (Which I, being extremely lame, am still working on my fic for. Errgh.) Anyway, Delirium by [livejournal.com profile] inveigler is harsh and gorgeous and heart-wrenching and has some of the best lines I've ever read. It's Spike/Xander, post-vampire apocalypse, road-trip fic (and it's LONG) and it's exactly what I wanted.

I'm looking forward to reading more of both ficathons (*cough* once I finish my fic) but here's a couple quick recs:

ifake an interest (iCarly, Sam/Carly) by [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid - I don't know the fandom, but I still really enjoyed this.

Rapture on the Rise by [livejournal.com profile] kanedax - hilarious Dr. Horrible fic. I love the way the author reused and altered elements from the show to create the AU.
Nominate your favorite female (cis or trans) characters! I nom'ed Selena from 28 Days Later. Morgana and Gwen already have threads, but I haven't seen Nimueh.

There's sooo many awesome women. Lisa Simpson? HELL YES. Tara McClay? Awww yes. Kaylee? For sure. Doctor Martha Jones? YEP YEP YEP. Liz Lemon? ROFLMAO YEAH. Molly Grue? DEFINITELY. Faye and Ed? HOLY SHIT YES. Mary Lennox? A+++. I'm not even entirely sure WHAT THIS IS but it is MAKING MY DAY. :D

Other cool things: Polyamorous Big Bang Challenge on dreamwidth. Sign-ups close July 18. ETA: AND ON LIVEJOURNAL: [livejournal.com profile] polybigbang!

Also, [livejournal.com profile] transficathon sign-ups are open until Friday. I'm still debating whether to sign up. I have so much on my plate right now and reel_merlin coming up and asdflkjalk I just don't know. I might see if I can pinch-hit instead.

I heard Amber Benson on the radio today! She has a new book out called Death's Daughter. They played I'm Under Your Spell. On the radio! Okay, okay, it was only NPR but still.

The interviewer asked her about Tara getting killed off and she said that people were upset especially because Tara and Willow were gay role models etc. but didn't mention how lesbians getting killed off is a long-held convention. (Oh hai Watchmen I see you over there doing that in 2009.) Whatever, it was an interview, you can't get everything in.

I want a cabin. With a loft. WHERE I CAN ESCAPE TO. And it should have internet. And magical porn-inspiring powers.

A friend was talking about writing a play with a gay or lesbian character who doesn't meet a tragic end, so now I'm thinking about maybe doing something similar with a transgender character. Have no ideas yet, but I'll think of something. Am currently obsessing over Pan's Labyrinth [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fic and thinking hard about the juxtaposition of violence and fantasy. Deep thinky thoughts. Which I will not subject you to.

I've seen some of the discussion (mostly in bandom I think?) about warnings and triggers and I don't have much to say other than that, for me personally, if I *am* warned about rape/non-con in a story then I am much less likely to be freaked out by it than if I go in without any foreknowledge. Also, if you don't know what triggering means, PLEASE FUCKING GOOGLE IT. I don't think anyone over 18 should be walking around without SOME idea of what a great many people are struggling with all the time. It's been said before but - if you think you don't know anyone who's been sexually assaulted: you do. That's all.
I meant to plug this a while ago but forgot:

Special Pitching Event Around Solstice on [community profile] fandom_of_one - what this means is you can sign up to pitch a small fandom. Also, Summertide (same link) - if you post a New Years Resolution story to the Yuletide archive during June, July or August, an anonymous person will make donation of $5 to a (Paypal-accepting) charity of your choice. Good motivation for finishing NYR stories!

As I'm sure you all know Internation Day of Femslash is July 18. But did you know that July 25th is International Day of Femslash FEEDBACK? Hell yes. You can sign up here.

Also the first annual transficathon - sign-ups start July 3. The focus is on fanfic about transgender and intersex characters (which doesn't show its ass.) Compilation of suggested fandoms/people is starting.

OMG, there is so little book fiction with transgender characters out there. SO LITTLE. :-(

A PLEA: So I was totally going to try to figure this out on my own but well... that kinda failed. So! Can anyone tell me how to make my dreamwidth entries be in a "plain" style similar to how my entries look on livejournal (example.) I'm not talking about the journal itself but when you go to an individual entry.

- Last night I played a game where you run around in a darkened theater and try not to get tagged and turned into a "vampire" (there's more rules but that's the basic idea.) It was SO MUCH FUN. Does anyone know of other games like that? I played one at RPI last year that I think was called "Murder" but I can't remember the rules and my google-fu is failing me on this.

- Does anyone have these Merlin Season 2 set pictures that maybe weren't supposed to be posted online (and could you link/email them to me)?

- We are almost definitely moving out of our place at the end of this month. Which is good, b/c the rent is v. high. We're not sure where we're moving to, or if the boy will stay down here and I'll go home... But our friend who lives in the apartment we used to live in has offered to let us stay there (even with the cats! which I was not expecting at all) so that's a huge relief. On the other hand, I still really want to live in one of these.

- On Tuesday, the boy was sick so he came home from work early and we rewatched all of Doctor Who Season 3. It was glorious. Also, we started watching Dollhouse (Joss Whedon's new show) on this recommendation. I have to say, I don't think I'll be writing porn for this fandom. I think I'd feel way too icky.

- I'm on Chapter 5 of Watchmen. You know how some Harry Potter fans are all about the Marauders? Well, I think I'm going to be all about the Minutemen. It helps that about half of them are canon queer it seems like. (I think this is kinda awesome.)

- Today I submitted a bunch of prompts for the next Kinkfest round, including some for Merlin, Merlin RPF, Being Human (RPF), Pineapple Express, and Audrey/Jac. (Speaking of the latter, [livejournal.com profile] yinyangggg for all your Audrey/Jac needs.)

- In case ye've not heard, fandom voting for [livejournal.com profile] femslash09 is still open. You don't have to be writing in it to vote, btw.

- [livejournal.com profile] writing_buffy looks pretty awesome. Too bad I'm not writing in BtVS fandom (well, aside from those backlogged WIPs.) I'm pretty much failing at writing AT ALL right now and it's not a good feeling. I did start a journal though. I feel lately like I don't know who I am anymore and I think it's partly my lack of documented thought processes. And yet I believe strongly in oral language - in stories (and songs) that spoken and sung, not written down. Maybe it's just that my existence was predominantly text-based for my first 15 years.

- Goodbye unreadable fonts and color text on same color styles! I finally found a Greasemonkey plug-in that automatically changes livejournal pages to your own journal style: My_Livejournal_Style. Since I like seeing frontpages of journals and communities in their own style but posts in my style, I have the following settings (under "Manage User Scripts"):

Included pages
http://community.livejournal.com/*/*.html
http://*.livejournal.com/*.html
http://community.livejournal.com/*/*.html#cutid*
http://*.livejournal.com/*.html?thread=*

Excluded pages
http://community.livejournal.com/*/
http://*.livejournal.com/
(plus all the ones automatically listed)

There's probably some others I haven't run across yet. I'm actually thinking of adapting it so that it adds ?format=light instead of ?style=mine to pages - then I wouldn't have to be logged in for it to work. It should be adaptable to Dreamwidth too.

Dear Fandom,

Would you do me a favor and PLEASE put the link to the second part of your story at the TOP OF THE PAGE? I'd like to download your story to read at home (where I has no internets) but I'm really damn sick of having to scroll down to find the link. And it's enormously frustrating to finish half of a story and then realize you don't have the rest.

YES I KNOW IT'S PETTY AND IT'S PATHETIC THAT I DON'T HAVE INTERNET AT HOME. Shut up.

Love,

me

I need to go home and go to bed, but first I'd like to gloat.

YES, GLOAT!

Because tonight I wrote about 1,900 words and finished a story! Blah blah it's only fanfic but still. It pleases me. And the secret to overcoming my procrastination? I asked someone to beta it. So, then I had to finish it! On the down side, this seems to be the only way I am able to get things done. But on the up side, it does work. (Oh man, I miss wrisomifu. WHY ARE YOU IN NOVEMBER WRISOMIFU? I WAS DED IN NOVEMBER!)

So, following from this, would anyone be willing to beta a Gwen/Morgana (fandom: Merlin) crack story, which will probably be about 5000 words? I'm hoping to submit it for thefuturequeen contest this week. (Along with a VID, ANOTHER FICLET, AND A WALLPAPER. Oh yeah, and half of my undergrad thesis. HAHA WHY AM I CRAZY?)

Also, I would like to gloat about the fact that I apparently have an AWESOME SINGING RANGE! My director is jealous of it.

Also also, last night we watched Persepolis the movie. I now have girlcrush on Marjane Satrapi. SO FUCKING TALENTED, OMG. PUNK IS NOT DED! *falls over*

Sorry about the caps abuse. I plead 2am.

NEW TAG: 2 am insanity!
So, LJ Elections. This Jameth guy is apparently in fandom (of some sort) and a furry. So why is there all this fandom-bashing from his supporters? I don't get it. I've voted for the "fandom candidates" who are in the lead and who have been recommended as competent people with integrity, without doing a ton of research myself (no time) but it makes me uncomfortable to see this kind of divisiveness between fandom and non-fandom folk, or between different sections of fandom. And seriously, ONTD, you think you're less weird than Harry Potter nerds? Seriously?

Second question: can you/should you vote as many times as you can (i.e. one vote for each account you have) in the elections? Is that what's expected?

Finally, on a happy note! The masturbation sentence-a-thon keeps on giving: Travis, Sunday, Greta, shower, Pete, fursuit (yay finally!!), Gabe, dildo. ETA: more Gabe + dildo! (Plus, full listing.) In semi-response to the third (which you should read, even if you think fursuit sex is weird, it's so gorgeous) I wrote this, which is not as amazing but makes me happy:
Patrick, fursuit )

Yo, what's that community for posting fandom quotations? Not [livejournal.com profile] metafandom discussion stuff, just interesting quotes?

Get yer prompts now for [livejournal.com profile] bandomfest and the Burn Notice challenge. I claimed "Fall Out Boy, touring by van, ZOMBIES!" for the former. And I'm claiming "Sam and Fiona - bickering that ends with an explosion, possibly even gun fire" for the latter.

Ugh, first day back to work. I am not enthused. I will probably think about writing porn all day. Mm, happy place.

Btw, I do kind of agree with this person who says there's too many fests (though they're mostly talking about HP fandom.) I would like to be writing more just to write. But I seem to need the kicks in the pants otherwise I never get anything done. *stares warily at languishing fics that were started in hopes of distracting self from other languishing fics*

I am <-------------------------------------------this---------------------------------------> tired right now. Fucking paper that's not done. Also I am now into ANYONE/Patrick. Especially Frank, oh the hotness. Procrastination expands my horizons, it's a fact. Also the fact that there is not enough pete/patrick out there. By which I do not include chaptered fic. Ugh, I can't stand chaptered fic. If you know good ones, let me know because otherwise I will ignore them.

Have you all seeen this?

At this point we are working on a solution to enable existing LiveJournal users to create new Basic accounts as so many of you have requested. Nothing has been decided yet, but we are considering options which would allow existing users to continue to create new Basic accounts.

But no changes will be made until May, after they meet with the Advisory Board, apparently.

Content strike continues

I'm not fully convinced that it's going to do much, but I'm doing it in the spirit of solidarity and with the feeling that the more approaches we use, the better. So I'll be "on strike" from tonight midnight to Friday midnight GMT, or 5pm to 5pm my time. My general conclusion at the moment though is that LJ has a monopoly but it's a crumbling monopoly. As people begin using other sites, I expect a slew of helpful APIs to pop up and eventually someday we'll all find our way back together... or else we'll just be a big fannish diaspora. (Is there a word for reconvening after the exodus? Will we reclaim the homeland? Okay, sorry, getting sentimental.)

P.S. Who's up for IRC party Friday night yo?

ETA on the boy: So, I finally convinced him to go to the emergency room and an awesome friend was able to go with him, and it turns out he DOES have an ear infection, two in fact - one in each ear (is that unusual?) They prescribed penecillin and nasal spray, and painkillers and sudafed for the plane ride. Apparently one of his eardrums is perforated, which sounds HORRIBLE but apparently is not going to cause permanent damage... though it may scar (???). But he will still be able to come see me and the plane will be painful but not dangerous (hopefully.) And then I will sit on him and feed him soup until he smacks me upside the head.

I'm not on LJ right now. So totally doing work.

But if I was on LJ, I would mention the Entourage Ficathon at [livejournal.com profile] entourage_fest which is still taking sign-ups until Wednesday at midnight (i.e. end of Wednesday.) I'll be spectating.

Look, I made a new icon! It's The Stig from Top Gear. The Stig is waiting for the bus because he believes in taking public transportation when he can't go at least 200 km/h. Mr. Businessman is turned on shocked by his bus-stop companion's shiny purple faceplate and strong, sinewy muscles encased in white overalls. Their eyes meet... or they would if Mr. Businessman could see The Stig's eyes. They will probably never see each other again. But for this one moment, they are together in front of a colorful striped wall. Mr. Businessman will go home and write a "Missed Connections" ad and put it on Craigslist, hoping against hope. But The Stig doesn't go on the Internet and so their love shall never be nurtured, never consummated, never fulfilled. And yet for one moment...

It could have been.

OK, I got a little carried away there.
