Regarding Chainsaws
by Hayden Carruth

The first chainsaw I owned was years ago,
an old yellow McCulloch that wouldn’t start.
Bo Bremmer give it to me that was my friend,
though I’ve had enemies couldn’t of done
no worse. I took it to Ward’s over to Morrisville,
and no doubt they tinkered it as best they could,
but it still wouldn’t start. One time later
I took it down to the last bolt and gasket
and put it together again, hoping somehow
I’d do something accidental-like that would
make it go, and then I yanked on it
450 times, as I figured afterwards,
and give myself a bursitis in the elbow
that went five years even after
Doc Arrowsmith shot it full of cortisone
and near killed me when he hit a nerve
dead on. Old Stan wanted that saw, wanted it bad.
Figured I was a greenhorn that didn’t know
nothing and he could fix it. Well, I was,
you could say, being only forty at the time,
but a fair hand at tinkering. “Stan,” I said,
“you’re a neighbor. I like you. I wouldn’t
sell that thing to nobody, except maybe
Vice-President Nixon.” But Stan persisted.

Go here ( http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1984.htm ) and change the number in the URL to reflect the year you were born to get the top 100 songs of that year. Strike through the songs you hate(d). Bold the songs you love(d). Italics the songs you like(d). Leave blank those you don't care about or don't recognize.

such a classy year I was born in )
[livejournal.com profile] cereta has a thread going on the subject of what was your first fandom & what's your current one? I love this kind of stuff.

RPS fandom is having fun with the He's Fucking Ben Affleck sing-along (<-- link to [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie's post w/ instructions on seeing Pwentz.)

I saw a guy drumming (with drumsticks) on his steering wheel yesterday. While driving on the highway. I'm guessing he was knee-driving, which I'm occasionally guilty of myself. But dude, you don't have to advertise it.

Also: the IJ porn battle masterlist.

I've been having a terribly good time over here consentually stalking people. And finding new people to stalk! There's already 19 pages! It's good, silly fun. (I didn't put my name in, but feel free to stalk me if you want. In the non-freaky way.)
Meme: What do you really use LJ for?

If you have your browser set to remember and complete web addresses you type into the address bar (it's AutoComplete on IE and Firefox), then type in http://community.livejournal.com/ and list the first nine addresses that come up. (Don't include any community whose rules state that you should not discuss it in a public forum!) If a specific post comes up, just put the community address not the link to the post. Don't list the same community twice.

my list )

The Meme:

After creating the meme, I thought I would try to find out more about AutoComplete. It turns out that, according to Microsoft's help pages it is based on:

• Your Favorites and History folders
• The contents of the folder you specify for files or folders
• The contents of the left pane in Windows Explorer
• A list of your most recently typed addresses, commands, or AutoSearch queries, which are stored in the registry

I also found a more detailed article on AutoComplete, which says that it gets its information from:

* The data store, primarily. The data store draws from previously completed INPUT type=text fields. The contents of the AutoComplete box are retrieved from the values corresponding to the field name.
* The vCard schema. This schema is created from the values specified in the Profile Assistant.
* The Common Name list. This list is generated from commonly used INPUT type=text field names from popular Web sites, and is linked to the respective vCard schema."

From what I can tell (and I'm not a programmer) VCARD_NAME categorizes different types of information (e.g. name, email, phone number, business) and then supplies them in the appropriate place.

I think it's also interesting that it uses a list of a "Common Name list" - which seems to indicate that it's also getting information from somewhere other than just ones own computer.

Rules:
- Bold all of the following TV shows of which you've seen 3 or more episodes.
- Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode.
- Asterisk if you have at least one full season on tape or DVD
- If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order).

I'm not as TV illiterate as I thought I was! )

I added Daria and The Prisoner.

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicise what you attempted, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk* to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list. If you haven't heard of them, just leave 'em alone.

An interesting mix of books )

Snaggled from [livejournal.com profile] brandinsbabe

1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?
There's some odd white bar-soap remnants on a shelf in the shower. And some liquid tea-tree soap with a pump.

2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
Yes, about half of one. I need to eat it.

3. Is there anything moldy in your refrigerator?
Possibly...

4. Are there any dirty dishes in your sink?
There weren't any when I left the apartment today!

5. What would you change about your living room?
More bookshelves.

6. Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty?
I am the dishwasher. There are no dishes in me.

A ZILLION MORE THINGS ABOUT WHERE I LIVE )
This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list.

[livejournal.com profile] delurker gave me the letter "I". Here's my list, with YSI links:

1) I Am A Scientist by The Dandy Warhols
I was *obsessed* with this song for months, right about the time I was getting into SGA so it will forever be associated with Rodney and Radek for me. It's a great song to be hyper to - or to make you hyper, in my case. It's got a lot of "woo woo"s, somewhat reminiscent of "Song 2" by Blur.
In me the scientist always stuck on always trying this. I try to live on science alone. Analysis and freaky sensitivity. We gotta live on science alone.

2) I'll Be That Girl by Barenaked Ladies
At first I liked this song because of the genderbendy-ness, but then I realized that's not really what it's about. It's about a guy (presumably) who wants a girl who completely ignores him. He proposes that if he was her, then she's be interested.
I'll be that girl, you would be right over. And if I were a field, you would be in clover. And if I were the sun, you would be in shadow. And if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow...

3) I Want You To Want Me by Letters to Cleo
From the "10 Things I Hate About You" soundtrack; it's the song at the very end where they're playing on the roof of the school. It's a really up-beat song, with a bit of a punk feel.
Shine up my old brown shoes, I put on a brand new shirt, I get home early from work - if you say that you love me.

4) I'm Not a Fucking Drag Queen by Peter Outerbridge
If you haven't realized by now... I really like soundtracks. This song is from the movie "Better Than Chocolate," it's sung by the mtf character (played by Peter Outerbridge.) It's good to sing along with on those days when no one seems to get your gender!
I'll break your fucking leg, sir, and then I'll pirouette while I mend my transgender heart!

5) I Do It For Your Love by Paul Simon
Nice mellow song and one of my favorite "romantic" songs. It has a comfy feel.
Found a rug at an old junk shop. Brought it home to you. Along the way the colors ran, the orange bled the blue.
From [livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2... Mark the TV shows you've seen. There are 60 tv shows on this list. Put your score in header and repost.
