Dear Prime Time Player

Hi! Thank you for signing up and writing for me! I'm really excited to see what you make. This is my first time doing NPT and I'm easy to please, so don't stress.

Any rating is okay. Feel free to write me porn if you want. I'm putting my kink list at the end of this post, so you don't have to scroll past if that's not your bag.

Sorry about the length. I tried to come up with some specific prompts for each character or relationship, in case that helps inspire you, but please don't feel limited to those ideas. I would prefer to read something that you're excited about writing than something you're not into. If you'd rather skip the optional details, that is your prerogative. ;)

( General notes )

( Optional details by fandom... )

comments

Just saw Catching Fire at the theater. It was awesome! <strike>I totally ship Haymitch/Katniss. WHOOPS.</strike> I think they translated the book really well to film. ( Spoilers for movie )

I have plans to watch the Doctor Who 50th with work friends this weekend! Looking forward to that. Need to think of some DW-related food item to make.

(Oh man, it's been so long since my last post. Let's just skip over the past few months and say that things are betterish now. How have y'all been?)

comments

Guys, 5 acts is back again and it's super low pressure, you just write down some kinks and people write comment fic for you. Yay! I have a ton of ideas of things to write, now I just need to get down to it. (Note to self: you are not allowed to do any more canon rewatch just to write comment fic.)

femslash12 stories are out! The masterlist is up here.

My favorite one so far: cupid's got a gun by lastwingedthing, which is Teen Wolf, Lydia Martin/Ms Morell (played by Bianca Lawson aka the woman who doesn't age.) But it's really about Lydia and how she's strong and smart and she can't really deal with what's happened but she can do fucking magic and keep her head up. Basically this is what I want for Lydia - to see her come back from being someone else's pawn/object. And Ms Morell works really well as a mentor, someone who can keep up with Lydia and cares about her and won't lie to her. It's just brilliant, beautifully written, sweet and sad and hopeful. And the whole teacher/student thing is dealt with in the best possible way if that is a squick. GO GO READ IT.

Aaand... it is way past time for me to go to bed. The boy is sick with a cold and I really need to try to avoid getting sick too. But I was determined to post this before I get busy and forget.

At some point I will make the post about what is going on with my life these days (I has jobs!) and try to catch up with folks. I do not understand what LJ has done to filters - every time I try to read my flist, I am pulled into the vortex of fanficrants or something like that. I'm guessing that means it's time to do some housekeeping. Ehhhh.

comments

Five Acts!

Here's how it works:

+ Post a list of your five favorite acts/kinks to read about. Check out this list if you need some inspiration. At the bottom of your post, add what fandoms/pairings you're interested in.
+ Read other people's lists; the master list of lists is here.
+ Post comment-fic based off of other people's interests.
+ Once you've posted your list, post the link in the comments here so that people know how to find you.

( My 5 Acts )

comments

So go vote <strike>for Teen Wolf</strike> in the Polling Post if you're interested in writing or reading in the Femslash Ficathon!
Yuletide Letter '11

ETA 11/22/11: Okay, I'm finally going to stop compulsively editing my letter. IT IS DONE. FINIS.

For some reason, I only do Yuletide in odd-numbered years. This is an odd-numbered year. I am so excited!

<strike>In a few days, with any luck, there will be a "Dear Yuletide Writer" letter here.</strike> Hello Dear Yuletide Writer!!! There is now a letter for you here, if you're looking for it!

Sorry it took me so long to get it together. I tried to keep it short, but well... I don't really do short.

Yuletide: I <strike>am thinking of requesting</strike> have requested Bartimaeus Trilogy, Misfits, Borderliners by Peter Høeg. <strike>Fourth fandom to be determined!</strike> And The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead makes a return for another year.

( Yuletide Letter/Requests )

comments

signal boost: Help Identify Inactive Fandom Delicious Accounts!

Okay, fandom! Sometime in July, maybe even on July 1st, control of Delicious will transfer to AVOS. Any Delicious account that has not explicitly opted in to the transfer will be lost forever. I would like to generate a list of fannish accounts that have not opted in and back up all their PUBLIC bookmarks. To do this, I need a lot of help, in not a lot of time. That's where you come in. Things you can do to assist in this endeavor:

Link this post around!

Comment to this post with any fannish Delicious accounts that you know of. Don't worry about duplicating someone else's suggestions, or listing accounts that have maybe already opted in. We're aiming for maximum coverage in this step. I'll be filtering the lists programmatically. To that end, please keep your lists simple and consistent, with each account name on its own line and no extra text.

Feeling ambitious? Volunteer to help do the actual backing up by emailing me at my gmail account, verymurklins. You need to have Java installed on your computer and be willing to use a command line interface to run a script. More detailed instructions will be provided, of course, but since we're short on time, I won't be able to walk people through installing Java, so volunteers will have to get that part done on their own. Note: If your computer runs Mac OS X, it already has Java.

And what will I do with all the archived accounts? I don't exactly know yet. For now, I just want to be sure that someone, somewhere, has a copy of all this fannish data. Once the transfer to AVOS goes through, we'll get a feel for the new landscape of Delicious and weigh the options.

Read the post here
How to find out if an account is opted-in

comments

Senate may cut Planned Parenthood funding

As I'm sure most of you in the US know, the government is in danger of shut down if a budget isn't passed tonight. Republicans in the Senate are taking advantage of this to try and cut federal funding of Planned Parenthood and Title X.

Just to be clear, there is NO federal funding of abortion. If they succeed, what will be cut is women's health services, STD and cancer screening, family planning and contraception and it will disproportionately affect low-income women. Abortion services only make up 3% of the care PP provides. According to Senator Leahy (my senator ♥):

Around the country, one out of every four women of reproductive age has received care from a Planned Parenthood health center at some point in her life and even more strikingly, six in ten women who access care from a family planning health center, like Planned Parenthood, consider it to be their main source of health care. Eliminating funding for the Title X Family planning program and Planned Parenthood would put tens of thousands of Vermonters' and millions of Americans' health care in jeopardy.

What can you do? Sign the Planned Parenthood petition and call your senator's office. You can also get the phone numbers for all your representatives on the NOW website.

ETA: US Troops will have paychecks withheld if the government shuts down. Damn. This is basically politicians gaming the budget process and who will suffer for it? Soldiers and their families.

comments

hats and things

This afternoon, I was listening to a long Clark/Lex podfic and started to drift off (the fic isn't boring, I was just sitting in a warm room.) So, I went to lie down in the bedroom where it was cooler and lo, several hours later, I woke up all discombobulated and headachey. Note to self: you're supposed to be sleeping at night! I seem to have trouble with this concept.

Jean Auel (Clan of the Cave Bear author) has the final book of the series out. I think I read the first three books and then got a bit bored, but I might check out it because... CAVES! I was amused by this part of the interview:

GR: Describe a typical day spent writing. Do you have any unusual writing habits?

JA: A typical night. I'm a night person. Generally what happens is that I get up about two in the afternoon, and I make what is my husband's lunch or dinner and my breakfast, and we spend some time together in the evening. Then he goes to bed and I go to work. I often catch the sun rising. Mornings are terrible for me, so I'd rather sleep mornings.

I haven't become that extreme yet but there have been a lot of days where I go to bed just as the boy is getting up. (He points out that you can really only do that if you're a best-selling author. Or unemployed.)

Speaking of the boy, he discovered a new source of amusement that rivals lolcats: British Royals Hats. OMG, so ridiculous! The Ascot seems to draw the most awesome/awful hats. This is Princess Bea in what is colloquially known as "the guitar pick."

If you want to see more, the Mad Hattery is a blog dedicated to crazy royal hats. The most recent posts are not that interesting but I knew when I saw The Queen's pimp hat that we had stumbled upon something truly amazing.

There's this pink monstrosity and something that is possibly the ugliest hat I've ever seen (it looks like pieces of lemon peel glued together.) And hey, Princess Anne giving the camera a very we are not amused look. :D

Oh, my. How did she ever think it was a good idea to attach that to her head?

After you look at enough of them, you start to get desensitized and something like this seems fairly normal (despite looking like a spaceship and covering half her face) just in comparison. Then it takes something truly bizarre like The Queen of Denmark in costume to really make you rofl.

I have no idea what's going on here.

comments

hello and a rec

Hello! I'm back home in Vermont now, have been since New Year's, and recovering (knock on wood) from a cold. And I have a rec! I know, me, a rec... craziness.

Lady in Waiting by anonymous; it's a completed Gwen/Morgana fic on the kink meme with a "consensual D/s relationship but with inescapable mistress/servant power differential" and I think you can tell just from that that it's going to be interesting. It also includes corsets/breathplay and some "use of knights as sexual objects" (and the author says swordplay, but it's barely there.) It's really DAMN HOT but also complicated and all about trust and the meaning of kink, and Gwen is lovely and subby in an amazing, strong way and Morgana is flawed and very much herself. I think some of you... you know who you are... would find it to be up your alley.

ETA: It was sophinisba! Totally should have guessed that.

comments

American Family Association threats of violence against trans women

Threats Against LGBT People Persist in Rural America... [and everywhere else]

One of the most moving moments in Out in the Silence occurs when C.J., the gay teen who has been tormented for over a year at his small town high school, says: "This place isn't like New York or DC where everybody's liberal. I get threats to be killed."

In August, the OITS Campaign was starkly reminded of just how real the threat of anti-LGBT violence is, especially in small towns and rural communities where even a small minority of intolerant individuals can poison the atmosphere of the entire community.

The ugliness took place in Coudersport, a small town nestled in the ruggedly-beautiful hills of north central Pennsylvania. Despite a series of harmonious and successful events in neighboring towns, the OITS Campaign was met in Coudersport by a barrage of Tea Party and fundamentalist activists who tried to shut the screening down and called for defunding the public library simply for being the site of an openly-LGBT event.

Fortunately, the library board was not to be intimidated, and the resulting publicity helped to create an extraordinarily well-attended, diverse and productive town-hall event that received national media attention: Potter County Library Faced Protests Over Gay Documentary (Harrisburg Patriot-News)

( Read more... POTENTIAL TRIGGERS: transphobia and threats of violence to trans women )

comments

It's a pretty low pressure challenge - minimum 100 words for text, 1 min of audio for podfic, 30 seconds of video, 10-20 icons, or a final piece of art. Signups close at 11:59 EST tonight (but that's a soft deadline because we intend to get EVERYONE matched up.)

comments

When you see this, post a poem on your journal.

Regarding Chainsaws
by Hayden Carruth

The first chainsaw I owned was years ago,
an old yellow McCulloch that wouldn’t start.
Bo Bremmer give it to me that was my friend,
though I’ve had enemies couldn’t of done
no worse. I took it to Ward’s over to Morrisville,
and no doubt they tinkered it as best they could,
but it still wouldn’t start. One time later
I took it down to the last bolt and gasket
and put it together again, hoping somehow
I’d do something accidental-like that would
make it go, and then I yanked on it
450 times, as I figured afterwards,
and give myself a bursitis in the elbow
that went five years even after
Doc Arrowsmith shot it full of cortisone
and near killed me when he hit a nerve
dead on. Old Stan wanted that saw, wanted it bad.
Figured I was a greenhorn that didn’t know
nothing and he could fix it. Well, I was,
you could say, being only forty at the time,
but a fair hand at tinkering. “Stan,” I said,
“you’re a neighbor. I like you. I wouldn’t
sell that thing to nobody, except maybe
Vice-President Nixon.” But Stan persisted.

comments

why passing is not awesome

Passing is perhaps the central component through whether trans lives are considered ‘successful’ or not, and as such it is the central component of trans oppression. It is the part of our lives always up for debate in public, and by which cis people mark trans individuals as ‘other.’ I’ve written about this before, as a response to the cis belief that places self-erasure as trans people’s greatest fantasy, and my attitudes about passing remain the same: Passing is a system used by cissexist cultures to control trans people, to ostracize, and to justify violence perpetrated against them. Although passing is presented as a trans endeavor or desire, the truth is it is a system for cis people to identify trans people and to alert other cis people to their presence.

Just trying to work my brain around the concepts in this blog is showing me how much internalized transphobia I have. Part of that is that this culture is totally cissexist and we all get a great, heaping dose of it. And it is also that I grew up trans(sexual) in an earlier era -- the late '90s was when I was really involved, when I was on the mailing lists, when I was figuring myself out. I read Kate Bornstein (problem #1?) and Leslie Feinberg. We were thinking, synthesizing and growing, but still, passing as primary goal was the centerpiece* of our discussions, our struggles, our advice to each other. Turning that upside-down is really good but... disorienting.**

And I can that see this analysis, this questioning of transphobia, is starting to break down the walls to exactly what we wanted, the utopias we were envisioning but didn't know how to get to.

On a less personal level, it's got really good pointers for cis folks.

* On the trans youth mailing list, at least. Not so much on the Sphere list.
**And it makes me feel old.

comments

Flying home tomorrow! The great San Francisco adventure comes to an end.

Whoa, Tết falls on Valentine's Day this year. That's kinda neat. I'm feeling very New Year-oriented lately. How many times can you celebrate the New Year in one year?! Since I keep trying to start over and clear my slate, it feels appropriate.

My main New Year's resolution is to keep a journal (on paper.) But I'd also like to do some weight-training and try to gain muscle mass, continue exploring religious/spiritual avenues, help manach more with keeping the house clean, build something for the cats to climb, get chest surgery in May or June, keep in touch with friends, and fulfill some fannish and RL promises (ideally I'd like to get these done before Tết.)

Also, sleep more. Sleep = less acne, which would be of the good.

comments

still here

I'm not sure I'm quite ready to be a quarter century old, but I am pleased about my continued survival.

Today I finished reading this Trans Jew zine (link death, noes!) that was written ten years ago. Found some strange parallels: Wanting new language. The new language of then is old language now. He was 26, I am 25. Similar thoughts, wishes, wants, but diff identities. Ten years ago I thought of myself as a boy, which maybe is why I don't now (I'm not a boy anymore, even if I'm still trying to grow facial hair.) Emerging from dark years into dark days, a festival of light.

I like the image of sewing on the cover. My fingers hurt. Also, I am tired.

comments
