How Harry Potter got mixed up with a "Pro-Anorexia" comm

wait....let me get this straight: people signed a petition banning pro-ana communities because they're bitter about something that happened in a harry potter fan site? what was it that happened, and how does this connect? I don't get it... (from here.)

Yup that pretty much sums up the crazy.

The petition to get [livejournal.com profile] proanorexia banned. The original complaint ticket can be seen here (including a very well thought-out response from the LJ Abuse Prevention Team about why they're not going to ban the comm.) Also, apparently a LJ employee said something to the effect of "what's wrong with aspiring to be thin?" (haven't found link yet) which stirred things up even more.

Two eminently sensible responses: Cesperanza's and Xanphibian's

Amazing post by [livejournal.com profile] king_josie, one of the members of [livejournal.com profile] proanorexia, who says she is leaving the fight. (She is also the creator of these sites: ED info, Wannarexia, Proanorexia Suicide Support.)

Well, after all this, I can say that I've learned a lot more about anorexia. This may piss some people off, but - in a lot of ways, this reminds me of the LJ pedophilia craziness. People like to target vulnerable groups - and pedophiles and anorexics are two of the most vulnerable. In both communities, there are some people who are trying to connect with other people who suffer from the same psychological disorder and figure out to live a healthy, normal life. And there are some people who are trying to convince themselves and others that it's okay to do things that most of the society considers really bad - have sex with kids; starve themselves. In both cases, it's hard to distinguish whether the Livejournal communities do more good or more harm.

Yeah, those do seem really fucked up. On the other hand, what's the context? LJ would probably have a really hard time figuring out what is objectionable and what's not, since I doubt they have Russian translators on hand. Also, "white power" likely does not imply the same things to Russians that it does to Americans (though it may still be "hateful" - which is against the Terms of Service.) I'm sure that LJ's gotten complaints about this kind of stuff before, but they may not have the resources to investigate it.

I hope you don't mind, but i'm going to delete the above comment. I don't want anyone on LJ getting the idea that "linking to prohibited content" might include content on LJ's own servers.

Ha, how ironic is that. Do you mind if I repost the content without the links?

Sure, go for it.

If the HP geeks think proana is bad, wait'll they get a load of this joyful stuff:

Seriously objectionable NSFW pro-nazi Russian nationalism screencap, hosted on LJ's gallery service. [link deleted]

Interest search for "white power". [link deleted] Notice all the russian-language comms.

What. The. Hell.

Information loss makes me sad.
