lambda awards +1; straight/cis authors -1000000

Hey look, straight cis m/m authors showing their asses! Because my life totally needed more rage in it.

My favorite thing to come out of this so far is the discussion between kynn and elfwreck here. Kynn is just so damn incisive, it is awesome to behold.

Anyway, I know whose books I won't be buying!

ETA: More linkage here (and part 1 which links to early discussion.) Also specifies some authors and reviewers, which may be useful for DNW lists.

I'm having trouble figuring out what the fuck is going on over there, but my flist has been talking about it all day. Could you maybe clarify what the sides are (or tell me which of the five hundred links I should click on for a basic primer) and which side you're on?

You can make me fun of me for being dumb. Or lazy. I'm just overwhelmed by all the links and I want to understand.

now with prettier html!

Okay, basically the Lamba Literary Awards changed their awards policy so that they now only accept works by LGBT authors (though they also have an award for works by allies, I believe.) I've only read a fraction of the posts on the linkspam, but the first block seems to be mostly people who are against the change, while the second block seems to be pro-LLA and/or reactions to the fail of the first block. I haven't really investigated the third block yet.

I started here, which is probably one of the more full of fail posts. Erastes then went on to freeze comments, tell people off for not being polite, etc. etc. Seeking Avalon first talks about the race fail, then goes on to discuss the LLA decision and ally fail. And here worries about a "queer litmus test" (my comment.) Oh, and people are already planning awards for GLBT writing that aren't limited to GLBT writers.

I'm not specifically pro or anti the LLA decision though I think Kynn makes a good case for being pro. I'm REALLY against all the "oh noes they be takin' my privilege!" bullshit that the straight, cis m/m genre writers are spewing. I like m/m and original slash (well, some of it) but I don't think there's anything wrong with having the awards be for LGBT people only.

I've never seen an LLA for books by allies. I think that's one of those compromises people are discussing?

Hmm, or maybe they were talking about some other awards. I'll see if I can find it later...

Here we go, it's right on the webpage:

We celebrate straight allies of every kind and always have throughout our history, with the Bridge Builder Award, Small Press Award, Publishers Service Award, Editor's Choice Award, among other awards and acknowledgments, and we'll continue to do so.

When I first looked at this debate, it seemed almost civil. Ah, what a change a day can make. *adds more authors to the DNW list*

Thanks for the Kynn link. That totally made my morning.
