slashy DH reaction shot in "Long Goodbye" and discussion of what the heck the writers thought they were doing (AKA one reason why siriaeve and mecurtin totally pwn)

[livejournal.com profile] siriaeve: Nope - though that scene was both wonderful and awful. I'm talking about the scene where Alien-Who-Has-Possessed-John says to Teyla "He cares for you more than you know", and for no clear (heterosexual) reason, they cut briefly to a shot of Rodney in the control room looking completely and utterly destroyed. It's not a brief shot to carry through to a commercial break - it's just there, and I am at a loss to explain it in a straight way; because Lord knows Rodney's not in love with Teyla.
[Doctor Science: sga team totally pwns]

[livejournal.com profile] mecurtin: There are two interpretations for that bit. Both are probably operating at the same time:

1. Most important: DH is a much better actor than the rest of the cast, especially at conveying emotion (=*acting*, not just bein' pretty). He gets a disproportionate number of reaction shots, not only the "this is Rodney's reaction" shots, but also the "this is *your* reaction, O audience" shots, and the "this is what everyone is feeling" shots.

I think an unintended consequence of using DH for general reaction shots is to make him the emotional POV character of the series, part of the time -- even though Sheppard is really *supposed* to be the POV more often than not.

[livejournal.com profile] mecurtin: second part

because LJ is evil.

2. fanservice to slashers.

[livejournal.com profile] siriaeve: *g* Oh, I can absolutely see the first reason, with Rodney being the cast member who reacts with the most visible emotion nine times out of ten. It's just the fact that it's that particular line to which they show him reacting - not that Sheppard is in danger of being killed, but to the fact that Sheppard has feelings for someone else. It's one of those moments where you can kind of see what the writers are aiming for, but you're still left thinking "... seriously, guys? Like that? Um."
