I was just over in the Nanosystems building and noticed a sign in the hallway:
"These halls carry sound too efficiently. Please keep the amplitude of noises low."
Yes, I will do my best to decrease of height of any sound waves I produce!
Yay.
So, I've been wondering why pretty much all of bandom uses the | symbol nonstop... and then in writing this post, I found out that actually that is how Firefox run on a Mac displays ♥ (♥, the heart symbol.) There's a fix here (scroll down) but the problem with it is that you have to force all pages to display your chosen fonts to get it to work. So, you have hearts but everything else looks shitty.
If, however, you enclose the heart symbol code in "tt" tags (for typewriter text) like this - <tt>&hearts;</tt> (ETA: but without "amp" in there - it shouldn't be showing up. That's annoying) - anyone will be able to see it.
Though personally, I've gotten kind of fond of the | symbol.
... as in, Pete | Patrick
I think we should all start using it. It looks neat, it's easier to type, and there's a certain stupid fandom-ish pleasure to it. (I also could go off on a tangent here about how it is really cool because the vertical bar aka pipe is used in computing to symbolize inter-process communication, i.e. feeding your output back in as input... *cough* computer programmers, please forgive me...)
It's like the OTHER slash.... only instead of a slash, it's a pipe, which just means (for example) "Pete loves Patrick." (By the way, don't you love how I slipped the Pete/Patrick thing in all subtle-like?)
The pipe/vertical bar ( | ) does not, however, display exactly like the &hearts; symbol does... If you're not using a mac, it looks a little more like this (only slightly thicker):
│ (vs. | )
(Q for windows users: does that first line appear as a broken line for you?)
But sadly, the only way to get that symbol that I can find is to use the ascii code ALT 179, which it seems I can't do on my laptop.
I'm still left wondering why the heart is so popular in bandom, especially without an accompanying " 's" (e.g. Patrick ♥'s Pete.)

In conclusion: idk. (as a windows user, the bar doesn't look broken ^.^)

*sporfle* Okay, that's just awesome. Hee. Hee.
I agree that it totally looks better without the 's... yeah, that would just be dumb. Ooh, also it occurs to me that if you interpret the heart symbol as its code then the "s" is already there... So, you could read it aloud (why you would do such a thing, I don't know) as "Frank hearts Gerard" -- or if you include the ampersand, as "Frank andhearts Gerard" -- not that that actually makes sense but. It's like saying "I friended you." Language evolving! Or something.
idk either. grmmr sx. ♥

I love that html coding is starting to slip into my chatspeak ~ I use the strikethrough and /s codes in msn convos. 'm also starting to write fic ready-coded, just because it makes life easier. Languages do evolve~ see 'American' English for that =P

Anyway, I've 26 bandslash-tags on my del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us/macey_muse/bandslash), which is almost a quarter, so - safe to say I read it a lot ^.^

I am fully with you on this. I think that the | should replace the heart symbol for all fandom <3 references.
But then, you know, I'm a huge dork. This must be taken into account.

Huge dorkiness is encouraged around here... |

Though I kind of like your solution. That's cute! XD
...and holy crap, you're in bandom TOO? o_O I just got pulled in by a couple of my friends. I couldn't help it. Those are such pretty boys and they love each other so much. I am powerless to resist.

I'm not really *in* bandom as such... I'm more just obsessed with Patrick. Apparently I have a thing for (c)hunky, adorkable, balding men. Who would have guessed? ;-) I also really want indie band RPF (like Bonde do Role for example...) but there is not much of it.

Have you heard of Bonde do Role? They're my alltime ot3 (even though they're kind of broken up now. *tear*) See how cute? That's Gorky, Marina and Pedro from left to right.
I need to do a proper pimp post soon!

Your ot3 is pretty and I would love to see a pimp post. :3
From:

I have not seen those! Are they on youtube?
Aren't they the cutest thing ever? OMG. Sorry I saw the picture again and got excited. (Unfortunately, I downloaded all these great pictures of Bonde, I thought, but now I can't open a whole bunch of them... so picspam is going to have to wait... at least theoretically... until I have more time.)

A kiss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ppl4ZHezG1I) wot's extremely pretty.
And some extras...
English Summer Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgvQRgLVERI), where Brian looks stoned out of his mind and it's somehow really hot.
Running Up That Hill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHXVXG2kXBo), the video that caused my Placebo obsession. I just love the feeling it gives me. I don't know how to describe it. ♥

If that hasn't seduced you enough then I think you need to watch their new video here: http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/
Their new song is like if the beatles turned gay and started thinking about unicorns ok?

A reformed scientist? Is that like a reformed scientologist? (Sorry couldn't resist.) Also, what sort of science?
From:

Hey, that's pretty damn insulting! *grin* They're nothing alike.
My science-ness - can you guess? I've had, in the past, kitty-cats named: Zoisite, Pyrope, Barite, Tourmaline, Galena, Phlogophite, Muscovite, Anthracite...
It's just a - a dalliance! I swear!
If I had a $ everytime I heard that...
From:

*checks* They're rocks, yaaayy! All those "ites" - had to be. (I was going to be really embarrassed if they were bacteria or something though.)
Also, dude that's a lot of cats.
From:

As for the cats, the first three have gone on to the catnip-fields-in-the-sky, the next four live with my ex and I've only got Anthracite (Ani, my icon) and one other.
From:

Aw kitties. Those actually make good catnames. Though saying "Phlogophite! Here, kitty!" would take a little getting used to. (A friend of mine had a cat named Freedom and they realized soon that they were always saying "No, Freedom, no!")

Don't do it!!! Don't jump, briar pipe!
Seriously though, I'd be the last person to rush someone into bandom - I thought it sounded really really dumb for a long time. So you're slashing guys in bands? But only in *some* bands that are on the same label or that toured together? Why?! I was rapidly confused even more by the discussions on OTW. The first time I really felt like I understand *at all* why people liked bandom was when I read this essay about "the stagegay" - i.e. (male) bandmembers being affectionate/effeminate with each other on stage. (Btw, I don't have a stance on the issue, it just helped me understand why the fen were fanning them so hard.)
Anyway, I started reading fall out boy fic for fun, while telling myself I wasn't going to get attached. But then Patrick Stump kind of ambushed me. See, sometimes he kinda looks like a girl (I like that) and then sometimes he looks all butch (mmm, shoulders) and he's a big dork and sometimes looks like he should be a folksinger. (Did I mention that he's kind of a dork?) He's basically sex incarnate. Not to mention a pretty amazing musician and singer. Also extremely slashable.

Don't jump
*laughs* Thing is, I'm not against RPF or anything like that, though I don't tend to get heavily into it because I'm a canon whore and, you know, these are people with real lives that should not be googleable (even though they probably are). I just really don't need another fandom right now.
Also, for some reason, I think Patrick is cute but don't feel anything when I see him. Possibly it's the sideburns. My father had sideburns in his wedding photos. My mother always wants to know why I'm laughing when we look at them.
It's the patd gsf that I am weak for. Puppy piles ho! (Also, it's possible that I find Jon unreasonably attractive, for such a young guy. We'll pretend it's his personality.) Or we can go with your excuse and say it's the stage gay. ^_^
From:

Reading RPS always kind of weirded me out before. It's really weird but I have almost completely stopped thinking of them as real people. I realized this when I stated plotting things out in my head and I was thinking about, hmm can I twist canon that way and maybe so-and-so's really this, and it was exactly like with fictional characters. It's probably also that I'm not that into them yet, so I don't really care about the real people the characters in my head are based off of (that sounds totally callous but I think I feel better that way.)
I know, sideburns, what? I can't explain it. (My dad had sideburns at his wedding too! OMG. Shit! I just... my boyfriend has red hair. So did my Dad. I never thought of that because my Dad has had white hair for so long. This wouldn't be that big except they're also very similar personality-wise. EEP UNWANTED PERSONAL REVELATIONS! O.O)
Anyway... um. back to bandom. Jon is hot, I agree. Patd all look really young to me... but cute. I'm not so into the skinny boys for some reason but Spencer (especially pre-beard) is lovely.
Not just the stage gay though! The thinkiness! You know? But okay, the stage gay is good too.
Ack. That was unexpected. I'm totally blaming you for my impending mental breakdown, I want you to know that. ;-)
