Still Not Wanted: Girl Geeks

A collection of angry-making links. But the comments are GOLD (though there's a couple trolls towards the end.) Lots of discussion of games and which ones let you play female characters and so forth. This comment caught my attention though:

I got Skate2 and you can choose to play as a man or woman... But if you choose a woman, you get a "gender bender" achievement, because obviously a woman wouldn't play it so you must be trans or gay... And, even when you created a female character, all the dialogue still referred to you in the masculine!

Just... what the fuck? WHY? Does the game reward you "gender bender" points for other stuff too?!

Also, the American Medical Association did not adopt Resolution 710 (A-09): Identifying Abusive, Hostile or Non-Compliant Patients today. Which is good. Somehow I still feel like throwing up though. I think it might be reading about forced C-sections that did it.

Being a girl nerd can be stupid retarded sometimes. Most girls in this shit tend to make it worse with their ridiculousness too. It's fucking annoying. I just want to be a nerd and not have to fuck around with this bullshit.

argh. I'm not even touching that "girl's guide to comic con" thing.

wtf, Skate2? Well, I usually play games as a male character, because they usually get cooler-looking stuff. Where's my "gender bender" achievement? :/ that's just so unnecessary. ugh, this also reminds me of this game that I love called Arcanum, but where, if you play as a woman, there is this quest you can only complete with either sleeping with the obnoxious guy character or killing him. :| (at least those were all the options I got, and i tried with two different characters.)

...That's fucking stupid, with Skate2. o_O (OTOH, the commenter's assumptions in their statement that "a woman wouldn't play it so you must be trans or gay" - ie, that "women" and "trans or gay" are mutually exclusive categories, and that being "trans or gay" = "gender bending" - EW.)

Hmm yeah, they definitely made some assumptions there. Didn't catch that the first time - I just thought they were sarcastically "agreeing" with the game makers.

hee...i tend to enjoy playing as a bloke...not sure why...i probably just got used to the male characters being either the only choice or the best choice early on...(although i suppose playing tomb raider counts as playing as a woman...)
that said, the elder scrolls has so little difference between the two that i'm happy to play as a girl, just because kicking arse in a full-length evening gown makes me happier than doing it in a tunic...so i suppose some games still give you the choice as to what you which gender you want to choose...

i applied to med school at 17. when i did, i knew enough about my chosen career to know that (1) people would sometimes not be grateful even when you're trying to help them and (2) people would sometimes do things that put their life at risk because they didn't listen. i find it ridiculous that a bunch of fully-trained medical professionals have obviously not come to terms with those aspects of healthcare yet. there are always drawbacks and, really, in america you guys pay out of your own pockets for healthcare...so you should probably get some respect for your money...

that said, some of those examples were so exaggerated that they made em shake my head and roll my eyes. for example, no realy doctor is going to suggest that someone go on an 800 calorie diet...they might suggest dieting, sure, but they're not trying to make more paperwork for themselves by killing people off...

...but some of those other one's were bloody scary. makes me glad i live on the other side of the atlantic...

...but at least it didn't pass, right?

Obviously it is a problem and I think it needs to be dealt with but not by blaming patients. And I've done all those bad things - I've adjusted my meds, I've gone off meds without "asking" first (usu b/c of bad side effects), I've missed appointments, I've forgotten to fill prescriptions, I've forgotten to take a dose, etc. In my case a lot of that has to do with having ADD. But I think no matter the reason, it shouldn't be criminalized (or go on your record as if you were a criminal.) I'm really glad it didn't pass. On the other hand, it sounds like they were mostly like "well, this is the wrong forum for that." So I'm sure it will come up again.

Heh, IIRC the UK has pretty horrid sectioning laws. And have you heard about community treatment orders?

I think most of us have done something that would have us on that list at some point. It's part of being human, in my humble opinion. We all do things that the doctor probably wouldn't suggest but, really, if we only did as they said we'd have a horrible bloody time. It's not criminal. It's stupid because, in the long run, hospitals would end up empty...

Don't even get me started on psychiatric care over here! I can rant about it all day long. Really, a lot of it comes down to funding, the number of units that have been closed down over the last decade is sickening and people aren't getting the help they need... It's because, really, the government can get a lot of praise for lowering levels of heart disease and showing waiting lists for hip replacements are shortening and everyone just ignores those who don't have 'physical problems' until something horrific happens and then they just go for knee-jerk reactions that don't help anybody, really...and it's only when people other than those who need the services get hurt that anyone even notices...I remember ranting about this about 5-6 years ago after I'd watched a documentary about people who had been failed by services over here and had ended up jumping under trains and thinking 'surely someone wants to do something to cut down these figures'...hmrph...I could go on forever, but I'm meant to be revising and I'm trying not to let myself get riled up too much...
